ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT:
MHS Alumni & Current Miramonte Swim Coaches
Head Swim Coach Trevor Rose (2001) and JV Swim Coach Jason Lammert (2013)
For both Miramonte Swim Coaches Trevor Rose and Jason Lammert, Mats Swim has come full circle. Once diving off the blocks and swimming laps, they are now on deck sporting whistles, baseball caps, and sunscreen. Read on to learn what these coaches have been up to, how the Mats Swim team finished out this year, and get nostalgic about Orinda’s summer rec swim days.
1) Please tell us a little about yourself and your history with Miramonte High School.
TR: I graduated from Miramonte in 2001, and my mom, Janine Marin, was class of 1972. My uncles, Doug, Curtis, and Greg Marin also attended Miramonte. I swam, played water polo, and wrestled at Miramonte. I captained both the Miramonte swim and water polo teams.
JL: I graduated from Miramonte High School in 2013, and my younger brother, Justin Lammert graduated in 2017.
2) Can you tell us what you’ve been up to since high school, for those who might not know?
TR: I attended UC Davis (‘05), where I played water polo. Since then, I have been blessed to find a path to make coaching a career, met my beautiful wife Sheila, and in 2016 had my daughter Aven (who plans to be MHS class of 2035!!). Currently, I am the head swim coach of Miramonte as well as the coach of Moraga Valley Pool.
JL: After graduating from Miramonte High School, I attended Pomona College (‘17) where I pursued a degree in economics while also competing as a member of the collegiate swim team. During my time at Pomona College, I founded an academic consulting firm, which I built from the ground up and continue to manage to this day.
During college, I interned each summer at Morgan Stanley in their Private Wealth Management division. Following graduation, I was fortunate to receive an employment offer from the same team that had initially hired me as a seventeen-year-old intern. Today, I serve as an Investment Consultant on this team, where I leverage both my academic background and practical experience to provide comprehensive financial guidance to our clients.
3) What is your greatest personal accomplishment?
TR: My greatest personal accomplishment is being a husband and a father. It’s hard to quantify life until you develop deep caring and empathy for others, and, for me, being a husband/father has been incredibly meaningful.
Professionally, I’ve also been blessed and had the opportunity to break both high-school and club records as well as earn personal honors in the CCCAA and Masters Swimming Worlds.
JL: My greatest personal accomplishment was training athletes to knock me off the Miramonte individual swimming Top 10 times list. The feeling of training someone to be better than I is a feeling that I will never forget.
4) How did you get into coaching? What do you most enjoy about coaching rec swim?
TR: I started coaching at Orinda Park Pool when I was 13. I had influential mentors throughout my career who both encouraged me as well as gave me the opportunities for growth in the coaching field.
I was a Park kid my whole swimming life, and upon graduating was told that I should “take a little piece of Park with me”. I feel that MVP has given me the chance to take what I loved about youth sports and mesh it with my deep feelings about culture and community in the best way possible.
5) What can you share about the rec swim summers in Orinda these days?
TR: The All Orinda has remained true to its roots in my opinion, and though the “motion lotion” has been traded for fast suits, I feel that kids are getting more and better opportunities in the sport now than ever before. It speaks to great parenting and how solid our community is.
6) What can you say about your time at Miramonte? How did it help prepare you for success later in life?
TR: My years at Miramonte were some of the best of my life. I was pushed athletically, which led to my collegiate and masters athletic careers, and more importantly, I was pushed academically, which led to my love for reading, writing, and philosophy. I still feel that I haven’t fully paid back all the lessons I was given at Miramonte (and specifically in Mats Swim) and thus work hard to be a great coach and pass those lessons on daily.
JL: My busy schedule at Miramonte equipped me with excellent time management skills that are extremely important to me now. This preparation enables me to maintain a packed schedule because, as busy as I think I am now, it is not nearly as challenging as being a high school student-athlete was.
7) Did you have any favorite Miramonte courses and/or electives?
TR: Engineering Drawing can take full credit for the fact that I still write in all caps. Crafts helped further my love for art, AP Bio was my favorite class as a Miramonte student, and swimming and water polo led me to my career in coaching.
JL: My favorite elective at Miramonte was public speaking. The class was highly influential in teaching me how to confidently present to large groups of people, and it has proven to be an invaluable lifelong skill.
8) Do you still stay in touch with your MHS friends- how have you stayed connected?
TR: I do keep in touch with folks, and it’s fun to be at the point where I’m working with their kids now. It’s a great “full circle” here in Orinda.
JL: I still stay in touch with a handful of friends from my Miramonte days. Texting began becoming part of everyday life when I was in high school—I used a Nokia flip phone for texting then. Much of my current connection with friends happens through texting or social media throughout the year. While I'm less involved with the alumni community at present, that will likely change as the athletes I coach graduate and become alumni themselves. The message I would like to share with fellow alumni and current students is simple: stay connected and network.
9) What is the Mats Swim team like today?
TR: I’ve been coaching Mats Swim since 2006, and currently the team sits at about 80 athletes. We’re very good this year, particularly in the sprints. We have a fantastic freshman class, great developing talent in the middle grades, and superb leadership from our upperclassmen. I’m very proud of what we’ve been able to build and know that it is just a start.
JL: I have been coaching the Miramonte High School Swim Team since 2023. I have been very blessed that Head Coach Trevor Rose was also on the coaching staff when I swam for Miramonte back in the day! Orinda has a very strong aquatic background and every year we field an incredibly competitive team and we maintain high standards and a supportive culture that has become ingrained over the years. Every year our team exceeds expectations both within and outside the pool and has a blast doing so!
10) Is there anything else about being a Miramonte coach that you would like to share?
TR: As for records that still stand… if you’re alumni, come see! The records are posted on deck and we’d love to say hello. GO MATS!
JL: Miramonte High School is truly the greatest place to coach: great kids and super supportive parents. I can focus during the season on coaching, and everything else gets handled behind the scenes.
